Glastonbury Top (Glastonbury Tor / Hill
St. Michaelβs) Glastonbury Tor located near the ancient city of Glastonbury (Somerset County, England) is a natural elevation with a height of 145 meters, above which rises the medieval tower of the Church of St.Michael, damaged by the earthquake on September 11 1275.
The hill is located in the form of seven man-made ledges. During archaeological excavations, it turned out that in the III century BC there was a significant Celtic settlement here, and in the V century AD - a small fortress. In ancient times, during frequent floods, the hill dominating the surrounding marshy terrain turned into an inaccessible island. Locals tend to interpret its ledges as an ancient Celtic labyrinth. The hill of St. Michael has long been associated in popular beliefs with legends about the king Arthur. In 1191 , the monks of the nearby Glastonbury Abbey announced the discovery of their sarcophagi with names Arthur and his wife Guinevere. In modern times the hill attracted the attention of occultists And researchers of paranormal phenomena who recognize it as a portal to the otherworldly worlds (Avalon).
